Alex Roberts

In the year of 1992, the club held its first Matchplay event that took place though out most of the year. The 32 players that qualified for the annual event, took part with each Matchplay round conducted in parallel with five of the regular club games.

The inaugural winner of the 1992 Matchplay trophy was seasoned club member Alex Roberts. Sadly in May 2009, the club was informed of Alex’s passing and to mark respect of his passing and also acknowledge the winner of the first ever Matchplay event, the Matchplay trophy was deservedly renamed to the ‘Alex Roberts Memorial Matchplay Trophy’.

From 2016, the annual Matchplay event will now be contested by 16 x players (instead of the usual 32 x players) and will be held over four rounds. As normal though, the previous year’s Matchplay winner will automatically qualify for the Matchplay event, but the remaining 15 x spots on the Matchplay draw will require the other players to work even harder to qualify for the final positions. The top five places from the three qualifying rounds will now earn a spot on the Matchplay draw.
